Yamaha’s Upcoming Electric Scooter Has Been Spied – It Will Be Released This Year

Yamaha intends to enter the electric mobility space with the production version of the E01 electric scooter in the near future.

Yamaha debuted a concept version of the E01 at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show, which was held more than two years ago. For the first time, a couple of test mules of this battery-powered scooter have been caught on camera.

Two heavily camouflaged test mules of the much-anticipated E01 e-scooter have been spotted in Japan. The scooter appears to be more than just a prototype and could be a near-production model, according to its appearance. Yamaha is also rumoured to be planning a media drive in Japan soon to gather early feedback.

Despite the heavy camouflage, the styling is strikingly similar to the E01 Concept from a few years ago. Closer inspection reveals a design inspiration for Yamaha’s flagship superbike, the YZF R1, on the scooter’s fascia. Furthermore, its proportions suggest that E01 will have dimensions similar to the NMax maxi scooter from the same manufacturer.

Though the final production-spec model is expected to be toned down from the concept prototype, E01 test mules have a flat nose with a large apron that houses the twin-beam headlamps and charging port. The scooter is practical thanks to features like a single-piece, broad saddle and chunky grab rails on the floating tail section.

The maxi scooter design creates a large tunnel between the rider’s legs, which could accommodate a large battery pack. A large windscreen up front, a rear tyre hugger attached to the swingarm, and a heavily faired front body panel are all notable styling features. With a wide, pulled back handlebar and a center-set footboard, riding ergonomics are likely to be fairly relaxed.

When it comes to features, it comes with a simple fully-digital LCD instrument console that displays vital information such as battery status, speed, and more. There are several indicator lights on the display, one of which displays a mobile phone signal, implying that the bike is Bluetooth smartphone compatible. Keyless ignition and multiple riding modes are also expected to be included in the package.

In terms of hardware, E01 is equipped with 13-inch alloy wheels on both ends. The scooter is supported at the front by telescopic forks and at the back by twin shock absorbers. Both ends will be equipped with disc brakes, which will be assisted by ABS. The company has not released any official information about its performance, but experts believe it will have a real-world range of 70-80 kilometres on a single charge.

On E01, Yamaha should provide a variety of changing options. It could also include Yamaha’s co-developed swappable battery technology, which the company is working on with other manufacturers for this scooter. The launch of this new electric scooter in India has yet to be determined. Yamaha India intends to introduce electric scooters in the near future.
