Yamaha is getting ready to launch new electric two-wheelers next year. Yamaha Motor Co Ltd.’s Chief Executive Officer and Representative Director, Yoshihiro Hidaka, has confirmed that new electric scooters for Asian and European markets will be unveiled in 2022. The upcoming Yamaha electric scooters will be sold first in Europe, followed by other Asian countries. New medium-size bikes will also be available for markets such as Europe, China, Japan, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand. Yamaha’s new motorcycles will be available starting in March 2022.
By 2050, the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer wants to electrify 90% of its product line. Yamaha’s upcoming electric scooters will be based on the E01 and E02 concepts shown at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show. The Yamaha E01 is a maxi-style scooter with sporty interior panels and seats. It’s claimed to have the same power as a 125cc petrol scooter. Bridestone slick tyres and front and rear disc brakes with ABS were used to construct the electric scooter concept. It has telescopic forks and a shock absorber at the back, which are connected to an aluminium swingarm.
Yamaha claims that the E02 electric scooter concept can match the performance of a 50cc petrol scooter. It has a lightweight body with a battery that can be removed and replaced. The electric scooter has a telescopic fork and front disc brakes, but no ABS. The Yamaha E02 is most likely made for slower speeds. For those who are unaware, Yamaha has already begun selling the EC-05 electric scooter in Taiwan. The model was created in collaboration with Gogoro, a Taiwanese electric scooter manufacturer
Within the next five years, the Japanese two-wheeler will expand its 125cc scooter and 150cc-250cc motorcycle models in India. These models will appeal to the country’s young buyers. The company is currently analysing various parameters such as performance, pricing, and infrastructure in order to begin its EV journey in India.
