Why is 24 January celebrated as “International Education Day”

The UN Headquarters in New York, Expo 2022 in Dubai, Harvard University Graduate School of Education, and Global Minnesota will all host events this year.

Every year on January 24, the International Day of Education is commemorated. This year’s theme is ‘Changing Course, Transforming Education,’ and it will be the fourth year of celebration.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared this day in December 2018 to commemorate the importance of education in promoting peace and development. 59 member states signed a resolution to commemorate this International Day of Education. This exemplified the political will to support transformative actions that promote inclusive, equitable, and high-quality education for all.

The UN Headquarters in New York, Expo 2022 in Dubai, Harvard University Graduate School of Education, and Global Minnesota will all host events this year.

Education is a tool that can be used to promote growth and progress, but access to it is extremely unequal. This divide was exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Due to the closure of schools, universities, and other educational institutions during the pandemic, education suffered a significant gap, necessitating a shift to an online mode.

The UNESCO’s Futures of Education Report stated, “Transforming the future requires an urgent rebalancing of our relationships with each other, with nature, and with technology that pervades our lives, bearing breakthrough opportunities while raising serious concerns for equity, inclusion, and democratic participation.”

Meanwhile, on November 11, India commemorates the birth anniversary of India’s first Education Minister, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, with a National Education Day. Azad was a strong supporter of women’s education.
