The 2021 Formula One and Formula 2 seasons came to a close this week at Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit.

For the majority of the race, it appeared that seven-time world champion Lewis Hamiton would win and give Mercedes a record eighth driver’s title.

With five laps to go, a safety car was deployed, completely flipping the script and setting the stage for a final lap shootout between title rival Max Verstappen and Hamilton for the championship.

The Red Bull Racing driver made quick work of his fresher tyres, passing Hamilton to win his first drivers title.

Carlos Sainz of Ferrari finished the season in third place.

Mercedes won the constructors’ championship for the eighth consecutive year, with Red Bull Racing Honda coming in second and Ferrari coming in third.

Carlin’s Jehan Daruvala had a bit of an up and down season finale in Abu Dhabi.

While the Indian driver won the first sprint race with a hard-fought victory, he finished seventh in the second sprint race.

Daruvala finished ninth on the road in the feature race, but was penalised five seconds for speeding in the pitlane, dropping him to 11th at the finish.
