VW Virtus will Make Its World Debut in India in March 2022 and Will Go on Sale in May

The facelifted VW Virtus will make its world debut in India in March, which will be the sedan’s first global market.

The Volkswagen Virtus, a midsize sedan that will finally replace the 12-year-old Vento, is the German brand’s big India launch for 2022. We can now confirm that the VW Virtus launch schedule is on track, despite potential delays due to the pandemic. The model, which is a facelift of a car that is already on the market in South America, will go on sale globally in March and in India in the second half of May 2022.

The Facelifted Volkswagen Virtus will Make Its Debut in India

“We will be introducing and rounding up our portfolio with the introduction of a new global sedan, which will world premiere in early March and then the model introduction in the third week of May,” said Ashish Gupta, brand director of Volkswagen India, in a recent interview.

The VW Virtus sedan has been on sale in many South American markets since 2018, but it is due for a facelift, and it will make its global debut in India. It will also be available first to Indian customers, followed by launches in South America and other markets.

The VW Virtus facelift will feature the usual set of exterior cosmetic changes, such as revised bumpers, grilles, headlamps, and alloy wheels, as well as new and updated interior features. The Virtus is a much larger car than the Vento it will replace, and when it goes on sale in India, it will most likely have class-leading dimensions, interior, and boot space. Given how much the sedan has grown, a source tells us there were plans within the company to call it the Jetta, but this was scrapped in favour of sticking with the global nomenclature.

Sedans have been losing ground to SUVs at various price points in recent years, and VW doesn’t expect Virtus sales to exceed those of the Taigun SUV. Gupta, on the other hand, is confident in the model’s place in the Volkswagen lineup, and believes it will provide buyers with some much-needed variety in a sea of SUVs.

“Families are making additional purchases as a result of the demand for personal mobility,” he says. “When you’re looking for a car to add to your stable, you’ll usually look at one or two different body styles. With the new global sedan, we are giving the customer a choice.”

What Else is New with The Volkswagen Virtus?

The Volkswagen Virtus will be built on the same MQB A0-IN platform that underpins the VW Group’s ‘India 2.0’ models, including the VW Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, and the upcoming Skoda Slavia sedan, which will go on sale before the Virtus.

The Virtus will be a sister model to the Slavia, sharing not only its platform, powertrains, and mechanicals, but also the majority of its body panels, various interior components and switchgear, seats, and possibly even the dashboard. Interior features specific to the Volkswagen brand, such as the steering wheel, upholstery colour, and more, will be present to set it apart from its Czech cousin.

Expect Skoda and Volkswagen to use equipment and features to differentiate the Kushaq and Taigun, as they did with the Kushaq and Taigun. In top-spec form, the VW Virtus will likely include a 10.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, connected car technology, leatherette upholstery, a sunroof, keyless entry and go, auto headlamps and wipers, a tyre-pressure monitor, LED headlamps, automatic climate control, six airbags, and much more.

Volkswagen Virtus Engine and Transmission Options for India

The Volkswagen Virtus sedan will be available in India with two petrol engine options, similar to the Taigun, Kushaq, and Slavia: a 115hp, 1.0 TSI three-cylinder turbo engine and a 150hp, 250Nm, 1.5 TSI four-cylinder turbo engine. The 1.0 TSI is expected to come with a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission, while the 1.5 TSI will likely come with a 7-speed DSG automatic and a 6-speed manual transmission.

VW could even divide the Virtus model range into standard and GT Line variants, with the latter offering slightly different equipment and sportier styling accents on the more powerful powertrains, as it did with the Taigun. There will be no diesel engine available, as with all VW Group products, including its key rival and sister car, the Skoda Slavia, which may put it at a slight disadvantage compared to competitors like the Honda City and Hyundai Verna.
