Vijay Rupani’s Resignation

Vijay Rupani on Saturday (September 11, 2021) resigned as the Chief Minister of Gujarat. The reason behind the BJP leader’s resignation has not been ascertained yet.

The development comes hours after Rupani took part in the video conferencing event where Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed the ‘Lokarpan’ of the Sardardham Bhavan and ‘Bhoomi Pujan’ of Sardardham Phase – II Kanya Chhatralaya. The Deputy CM of Gujarat Nitin Patel was also present on the occasion.

Rupani, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, was serving as Chief Minister of Gujarat since August 2016. He is a member of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly and represents the Rajkot West legislative assembly constituency.

Earlier on Friday, Vijay Rupani had spoken at a gathering of the Maldhari community. During his address, he had said that his government was dealing strictly with those who “trap” Hindu girls and elope with them. Rupani had also stated the BJP government in the state has acted tough on those involved in cow slaughter.

“My government brought in several laws with strict provisions. Be it the law to save cows from slaughter, the law to stop land grabbing, or the law to punish those involved in chain-snatching,” he had said.

“We also brought a law to stop ‘love jihad’. We are dealing strictly with those who trap Hindu girls and elope with them,” Rupani had said.

He was speaking after performing the ground-breaking ceremony for a planned building of the Raika Education Charitable Trust.

It is worth noting that Gujarat will go to the polls next year. Last month, the state unit president of BJP, CR Patil, had said that the party will contest the next year’s Assembly elections under the leadership of Vijay Rupani. Patil had given a thumbs up to the leadership of the Rupani-Patel duo.

Earlier this year, Vijay Rupani had also collapsed while addressing a public meeting at Vadodara. The 65-year old was given first aid on the stage, following which he was seen descending the stairs of the stage on his own.

He was then tested positive for the novel coronavirus, a day after he fainted on the stage.

Tweet by Vijay Rupani to PM

The chair was found in 2016

Rupani, 65, took over the post for the first time in August 2016 after the resignation of the then Chief Minister Anandiben Patel in the wake of the Patidar agitation led by Hardik Patel. He was also made the Chief Minister for the second time despite the relatively poor performance of the BJP in the 2017 election. The market of speculation is hot in the political circles about his sudden submission of resignation to Governor Acharya Devvrat after a big program of Patidar society attended by PM Modi today. Many veteran Patidar leaders of the state were present in that program. By the way, speculation about Rupani’s removal from the post was being heard in Gujarat for some time.

There was a rift with the party organization

On resigning, Vijay Rupani said that it has been the tradition of BJP that the responsibilities of the workers keep changing. But there is talk that the public is not happy with the leadership of Vijay Rupani. The High Command took this decision after knowing the public opinion. Accordingly, Vijay Rupani has resigned. After resigning, Rupani gave this information in a conversation with the media. It is also discussed that Rupani’s party was having a rift with the organization. Especially his differences with the BJP state president were coming to the fore.

5 years as CM was completed in August

In Uttarakhand and Karnataka, BJP has changed chief ministers in the same way before the elections. The change in Gujarat appears to be a sequel in this direction. Only last month, Vijay Rupani completed five years as Chief Minister. In the year 2016, the then CM Anandiben Patel had resigned, in his place Vijay Rupani became the CM on 7 August 2016.
