Director Subramaniam Siva’s Vellai Yanai has a pivotal scene in which a poverty-stricken Vellai Kunju (Samuthirakani) and the family go under discipline to deal with a dilapidated water pipe used for irrigation. Neither the water pump nor the tube, however, belong to this house. Unable to afford these sources, Vellai rents them out at exorbitant prices, and when he finally sees that all the pieces are once again worthless, he collapses, a paralyzed onlooker, out of sheer helplessness.
This critical sequence may seem like a petty battle with privilege for one of us as we are both exposed to such harsh realities as completely exposed on TV as a news scroll on TV or a snippet on a newspaper. But when seen in a film, especially with a ready-made actor like Samuthirakani, it gives you a tough fight and leaves you with a strong scene in your memory. Just in case you catch up with Velai’s struggles and step into his world, Shiva kills the context of a forced comedy by which a personality enjoys the battles of Vellai and his allies. This inconsistent comical transition keeps hitting you in the face, isolating all that is created by the intense parts.
An important character of the film loses his life by falling down from a tree when provoked by the cruel language of the borrower. Fast-forward a few minutes, and Yogi Babu’s KK sounds like the victim’s aide and says, “Marathukku maram thavura bandar paya dhan ni!” As the slapstick music performs within the background that makes us laugh. I wouldn’t have had difficulty with KK if the character was an extension of Karnan’s actor’s grey-shaded Vadamalaiyan. But unlike Vadamalaiyan, KK is primarily depicted here as a kind man with good intentions. Halfway through the Vellai Yanai, we keep getting these clear cues to cry and laugh, and so forth.
Even though we may have missed these inconsistencies, Vellai Yanai is impressed by some rudderless writing. The story is all but over as random dots every day make life more sustainable for Vellai and the group. To some extent, we stop rooting for leads and eagerly wait for this two-hour long film to end. And but, you do realize that Vellai Yanai might need a more durable watch with a limited cast. Thankfully, Samuthirakani gives many dimensions to the character. I quite loved how he turns his real-life optimistic personality into the little silliness the character gives.

When they say, “Nambikai oda eru, vazhvom!” Vitality is certainly contagious. While the film has full support from him and Yogi Babu, Vellai Yanai’s shock bundle is Athamiya, who has gone through a severe physical transformation for the role. The actor shines as the hapless spouse, Vendam Amrutam, and you wish the character had achieved longer screentime.
Though the ever-reliable Santhosh Narayanan tries his best throughout the film, the random writing sabotages all efforts in the music department. Despite having 5 songs, the album provides little flavor to the proceedings.
On several occasions in the film, we see the characters apologizing to the farmers that they are merely spectators of their struggle and milking their misfortune. After watching Vellai Yanai, I couldn’t help but wonder if it’s usually a slanted confession from the makers themselves.
