Umran Malik has undoubtedly dominated the ongoing 2022 Indian Premier League. He has been the most talked-about player throughout the competition, with many seasoned cricketers rooting for the teenager to make his India debut and earn a spot in the 2022 T20 World Cup, and Thursday night was no exception. Despite Sunrisers Hyderabad’s third consecutive defeat, Umran remained the star of the show against Delhi Capitals with his thunderbolt delivery, which smashed his own record and etched glorious IPL history.
It occurred in the final over of the Delhi Capitals’ innings, when Umran bowled a fuller delivery to Rovman Powell wide of off. The delivery clocked in at 157 kmph, beating his own season record of 156 kmph set earlier that evening. This is also the fastest delivery by an Indian in IPL history, shattering his own record yet again, and placing him second overall on the amazing list, which is headed by former Australian pacer Shaun Tait’s 157.3kmph. Malik also equaled India legend Javagal Srinath’s 157kmph against Zimbabwe in the 1997 tri-nation series in South Africa.
However, for Umran, Powell sent that delivery screaming through the covers for a boundary. He had stayed deep in the crease and punched the delivery through the gap between extra cover and mid-off with his bottom hand.
Despite his remarkable record, Umran finished the game without a wicket and conceded 52 runs in four overs against the Delhi Capitals. This was his second consecutive wicketless spell since his magnificent five-wicket performance against Gujarat Titans last month at the Wankhede Stadium. He had previously allowed 48 runs in four overs against the Chennai Super Kings in Pune.
“Umran was an incredible find. When you come up against the best, you learn from them. Things can change rapidly if we combine them “Kane Williamson, the SRH skipper, spoke about the youngster during the post-match presentation.
