Umran Malik Names His Bowling Idols “Not Followed Waqar Younis”

Umran Malik has named the bowlers he idolized ahead of the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa.

Umran Malik drew a lot of attention during the recently concluded IPL 2022, taking 22 wickets in 14 games for SunRisers Hyderabad, including a five-wicket haul against Gujarat Titans. The pacer consistently bowled in the 150kmph range, with the second-fastest delivery of the season coming at 157kmph. The Jammu-born bowler has been named in India’s squad for the upcoming five-match series against South Africa, which begins on Wednesday at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.

Former Australia pacer Brett Lee said last week, while speaking to news agency ANI, that Umran reminds him a little bit of Waqar Younis.

Umran, on the other hand, has stated that his bowling idols are Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and SRH teammate Bhuvneshwar Kumar, rather than the former Pakistan pacer.

“I haven’t kept up with Waqar Younis.” I move in a natural way. (Jasprit) Bumrah, (Mohammed) Shami, and Bhuvneshwar (Kumar) bhai are some of my idols. “When I was younger and coming up through the ranks, I used to follow them,” Umran told The Indian Express.

The pacer has also stated that he has not become overconfident since being named in the national squad, and that his goal is to help India win all five T20Is against South Africa.

“It’s pointless to get carried away.” Inshallah, if it is meant to happen, it will. I want to do everything I can for my country. In these five (T20I) matches, I have a chance (against South Africa). “My goal is for us to win all five games, for me to perform well, and for India to win those games on my own,” the 22-year-old said.
