Details about Toyota’s new midsize SUV have started to leak ahead of its global debut. According to our sources, Toyota will add a second model to the Urban Cruiser SUV lineup in India, with the Hyryder suffix. This new SUV, which will not be confused with the Vitara Brezza-based Urban Cruiser, will be a much larger vehicle. The SUV will be more than four metres long and will sit above the current Urban Cruiser, which may also undergo a complete redesign in the near future.
We can also confirm that the upcoming Toyota Hyryder will be available with two engine options, both of which are expected to be 1.5-litre petrol engines. Lower variants are expected to have a mild hybrid setup, while higher variants may get a full hybrid setup. The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder’s full hybrid version will feature Toyota’s hybrid system, which is similar to that found in the Prius and Camry hybrids.
As previously stated, the Urban Cruiser Hyryder will make its global debut on July 1. The SUV from Maruti Suzuki is expected to follow suit and be sold through Nexa outlets. The Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Volkswagen Taigun, Skoda Kushaq, and even the MG Hector and Tata Harrier will compete against both models.
However, it’s unclear how well Toyota’s highly fuel-efficient full-hybrid compensates for the absence of a diesel engine in its midsize SUV lineup, which the segment leaders have.
