Toyota India Reaches a Sales Milestone of 2 Million Units

A Toyota Glanza hatchback was sold to a customer in Kerala as the two-millionth model.

Toyota, the Japanese automaker, has just surpassed the two million (20 lakh) sales mark in India. Since it began manufacturing here nearly 23 years ago, the company has reached this milestone.

Toyota India has Reached a Sales Milestone of 2 Million Units

Toyota began operations in India in October 1997, with the establishment of a manufacturing facility in Bidadi, near Bengaluru, in collaboration with Kirloskar Systems Limited. The first model, the Qualis MPV, went into production in December 1999.

A Glanza was delivered to the customer from its dealership in Trichur, Kerala, as the two millionth car to be sold.

“Over the last two decades, Toyota has developed a solid foundation of renowned quality, durability, and reliability,” said Atul Sood, associate vice president, Sales and Strategic Marketing, Toyota India. “We hope we will be able to cater to more segments as well as newer markets in 2022 and beyond.”

Toyota currently operates two manufacturing plants in India, both in Bidadi, with a combined annual capacity of 3,10,000 units. The company currently has 419 dealerships and service centers spread across the country in terms of touchpoints.

The Glanza and Urban Cruiser, Toyota’s rebadged Maruti models, passed the 1 lakh sales mark earlier this year. The Glanza hatchback, the Urban Cruiser compact SUV, the Innova Crysta MPV, the Fortuner SUV, the Camry sedan, the Vellfire luxury MPV, and the recently launched Hilux pickup are among Toyota India’s current model lineup.

In the future, Toyota will release an updated Urban Cruiser as well as a new Creta-rivaling midsize SUV co-developed with Maruti Suzuki.
