Toyota and Maruti have Confirmed Mild and Powerful Hybrid Engines for New Midsize SUVs

At Toyota’s Karnataka plant, production of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and its Maruti counterpart will start in August.

The 2017-formed Toyota-Maruti Suzuki alliance is now prepared to make its next significant move in India. The two midsize SUVs that the two companies are co-developing will have electrified gasoline engines, with Toyota providing a strong hybrid system and Maruti Suzuki providing a mild hybrid system.

We can confirm that the 1.5-liter K15C petrol engine from Maruti Suzuki will serve as the foundation for both hybrid systems; lower variants will receive the mild-hybrid version, while higher variants will receive the full-hybrid setup.

The upcoming SUVs will compete in the fiercely competitive midsize SUV market alongside established leaders like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos, as well as the Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun from the Volkswagen group’s India 2.0 lineup.

Both brands have now announced that these SUVs will be produced by Toyota beginning in August at its Bidadi plant number 2, confirming our earlier report from April. By the end of August, Toyota’s Urban Cruiser Hyryder, a midsize SUV, is anticipated to be available for purchase, followed closely by its Maruti Suzuki rival.

These SUVs will be offered for sale in India and exported to regions like Africa, where Toyota-branded Maruti Suzuki models like the Urban Cruiser and Starlet (known in India as the Glanza) are already available for purchase.
