As the omicron variant of the coronavirus spreads around the world, Israeli ministers approved adding the United States and Canada to the country’s coronavirus travel blacklist on Monday.
The unusual decision to blacklist the United States comes as Israel’s infection rate continues to rise. The United States will join a growing list of European countries and other destinations where Israelis are prohibited from travelling and must remain in quarantine upon their return.

The measure is expected to receive final approval from a parliamentary committee. The travel ban will go into effect at midnight on Wednesday if it is approved.

In late November, Israel began closing its borders and restricting travel due to an increase in new cases of the more infectious coronavirus variant.

Belgium, Canada, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Switzerland, and Turkey were also approved for inclusion in the travel ban.
