The New Mercedes-Benz C-Class will be Launched in India in May

The Maybach S-class limousine, in addition to the fifth-generation W206 C-class, has been confirmed as part of Mercedes-Benz India’s new model offensive for 2022.

The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class sedan will be launched in India this year, according to Mercedes-Benz. According to sources, the next-generation W206 C-Class, which debuted internationally in mid-2021, could hit showrooms as soon as May 2022. In a recent interview with Autocar India, Martin Schwenk, MD and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, stated that the fifth-generation sedan will be available “in 2022.” He stated that the C-Class will be a high-volume model that will contribute to the company’s expected double-digit sales growth this year.

Mercedes-Benz India maintained its lead in the luxury car market last year, selling 11,242 vehicles. According to Schwenk, the outgoing C-Class had “a significant volume in 2021.” “I’m confident that the new C-Class will serve its purpose and help to drive up volumes,”

“We got a lot of mileage out of the existing C-Class,” Schwenk said. The German marque is missing a key product in its lineup, with stocks of the outgoing model nearly depleted. “We won’t keep that gap for much longer,” Mercedes CEO said, implying that the launch of the new C-Class isn’t far off. “We need to align our launches with the COVID waves,” he added. So, let’s see what happens.”

Almost a year ago, the latest-generation C-Class made its world debut. The wheelbase and overall length of the W206 model have both increased by 25mm and 65mm, respectively, promising more cabin space. The C-Class has been updated to match the latest generation of Mercedes-Benz models, including the new S-Class limousine, with sharper styling and new technology, including a large, tablet-style touchscreen infotainment system.

The new C-Class is powered solely by electrified four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines worldwide. And, while it’s unclear which powertrains will be introduced to our market, the company’s 48V mild-hybrid technology could be added to the India lineup as well. For context, the outgoing sedan offered two 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines – a 204hp turbo-petrol (C200) and a 194hp diesel (C220d) – with prices ranging from Rs 50 lakh to Rs 51.74 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

The new C-Class estate has already been spotted in India, but it’ll be the sedan that arrives in the United States.

The new Mercedes-Maybach S 580 limousine will be assembled at the company’s Chakan plant near Pune, as we reported a year ago. Now the automaker has confirmed the news. In a media interaction, Schwenk said, “We are introducing the (new) Maybach S-Class and have planned it for March this year.”

The Maybach S-Class (codename: Z223) is 180mm longer than the long-wheelbase S-Class sedan (V223) sold in the United States. The signature Maybach grille, central chrome fin on the bonnet, chrome accents on the bumpers, 34-spoke alloy wheels, Maybach insignias on the C-pillars, and optional two-tone body paint are all features that help it stand out.

The S 580 is powered by a 500hp twin-turbo V8 petrol engine with 48V mild hybrid technology and four-wheel drive. The model is expected to cost around Rs 2.5 crore (estimated, ex-showroom).

Mercedes-Benz India also confirmed the launch of the AMG GT Black Series during the media interaction. However, according to our sources, the automaker only had a small number of the sportscars available for the Indian market, and they were all sold out before the official launch.

The Black Series coupe is equipped with the most powerful AMG V8 ever installed in a series production vehicle. A 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox transmits 730hp and 800Nm of torque from the 4.0-litre petrol engine to the rear wheels. This Porsche 911 GT2 RS rival is capable of a 0-100kph sprint in just 3.2 seconds thanks to lightweighting measures such as extensive use of carbon-fibre throughout the body and plenty of aero trickery.

The brand is now looking to expand its retail network after starting local assembly of select AMG models in India in late 2020. “We’ve seen a stronger growth in the AMG portfolio than in the overall (Mercedes) brand in recent years.” We’ll keep concentrating on AMG (this year). In line with this strategy, we will open additional AMG Performance Centres in major Indian cities in 2022,” Schwenk said at the company’s annual meeting.
