The Karnataka police department has invited transgender people to apply for the position of ‘Special Reserve Sub-Inspector’ for the first time in an effort to promote gender equality.

The Karnataka police department has invited transgender people to apply for the position of ‘Special Reserve Sub-Inspector’ for the first time in an effort to promote gender equality.

‘Men, women, and transgenders’, including “inservice of residual and Kalyana Karnataka (Local) – 2021-22,” can apply for 70 positions, according to the notification for the Karnataka state police recruitment-2021.

Applicants must be graduates or equivalents from a UGC-accredited university and must obtain a certificate from the district magistrate certifying their gender status; otherwise, the application will be rejected. The online application process began on December 20 and will end on January 18, 2022, according to the statement.

Nisha Gullur of the NGO “Sangama” told PTI that she had petitioned the Karnataka High Court to allow transgender people to work in government jobs.

“We filed a complaint with the court in June 2020, and the judge ruled in our favour this year. The Karnataka Police Department’s decision to hire us is a welcome one “Nisha remarked.

According to her, Karnataka has over a lakh transgender people, with about 13,000 of them affiliated with her organisation.

The next challenge, according to Nisha, will be to create a welcoming environment for transgender employees in their workplaces.
