The BYD Atto 3 Electric SUV is Expected to Debut at The 2023 Auto Expo

With an MG ZS EV-rivaling SUV priced around Rs 30 lakh, the Chinese automaker will enter the personal EV segment in India.

BYD (Build Your Dreams), a Chinese automaker, is preparing to enter the Indian passenger vehicle market with the Atto 3, which debuted in China in February 2022. The all-electric SUV is expected to debut in January 2023 at the New York Auto Show.

BYD Atto 3: To make use of Patent-Pending Battery Technology

BYD made its commercial debut in India in 2017 with electric buses, and in November 2021, it will launch its all-electric MPV, the e6, for the fleet segment. BYD is now getting ready to launch the Atto 3 into the middle of the market. The MG ZS EV is its direct competitor; the Atto 3 is larger in every dimension, measuring 4,455mm in length, 1,875mm in width, and 2,720mm in wheelbase.

It’s also more powerful: the permanent magnet synchronous motor in the BYD Atto 3 produces 204 horsepower and 310 Nm of maximum torque. The company claims that this SUV, which weighs between 1,680-1,750kg, can accelerate from zero to 100 kilometers per hour in just 7.3 seconds.

The Atto 3 is available in international markets with two battery packs – 49.92kWh and 60.48kWh – with WLTP ranges of 320km and 420km, respectively. The Atto 3 is powered by the company’s patented Blade Battery Technology, which the company claims is far safer and more forgiving in harsh environments than other battery technologies. A 3-pin AC or Type-2 AC charger is available for charging, and it also supports up to 80kW DC fast charging, which is said to recharge the battery pack in less than an hour.

Atto 3 by BYD: Features

LED headlamps, 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, powered front seats, a digital instrument cluster, a 12.8-inch rotating touchscreen, an electric tailgate, and ambient lighting are all standard on the international version. Seven airbags, ESP, hill descent control, a 360-degree camera, and a tyre pressure monitoring system are among the safety features. Stop-and-go, fully adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, collision warning (front and rear), lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert, and rear cross traffic braking are among the radar-based advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) included.

According to company sources, the Atto 3 for India “will come with all of the ADAS features of the international models and will not skimp on equipment.” All of this, however, will come at a cost.

BYD Atto 3 will be Available as a CBU Import

The Atto 3, which will be imported as a CBU unit at first, will not be cheap due to high import duties. According to sources, the starting price will be around Rs 30 lakh. Also, the Atto 3 isn’t a particularly modern-looking EV, which could be a turnoff for EV buyers who value a techy, futuristic design.

Without a doubt, the Atto 3 will have its work cut out in India, where the hugely popular and significantly less expensive Tata Nexon EV has established the benchmark against which all mass-market EVs are measured. BYD, on the other hand, is hoping that the Atto 3’s combination of cutting-edge technology and strong performance will entice buyers who are willing to pay more for a larger, better-equipped vehicle.
