The Mercedes-Maybach S650 Guard is certified with VR10-level protection, the highest level of protection, and the car windows are coated with polycarbonate, which can withstand hardened steel core bullets and even laced with the 2010 Explosion Proof Vehicle rating.
According to security sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cavalcade now includes a highly sophisticated Mercedes-Maybach S650 Guard that can withstand bullets and explosive blasts as part of a massive security upgrade.
On December 6, PM Modi was first seen with the new car at Hyderabad House in Delhi, greeting Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was on a two-day visit to India, and it was also spotted in the rally convoy recently.
According to reports, the new vehicle has been certified with VR10-level protection, which is the highest level of protection, and the car windows have been coated with polycarbonate, which can withstand bullets with hardened steel cores. It is a specialised vehicle with the 2010 Explosion Proof Vehicle rating that protects occupants from a 15 kg TNT explosion within a perimeter of only two metres.
Meet the car’s beast.
The S650 Guard is powered by a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine that produces 516 horsepower and 900 Nm of peak torque, with a top speed of 160 kilometres per hour. The lower part of the vehicle is heavily armoured to protect the occupants from direct explosions, while the cabin has been designed so that the occupants can get air during a gas attack.
This armoured car also has special run-flat tyres that will continue to function even if they are damaged or punctured, allowing for a quick exit from dangerous areas.
The cost of this car has not been disclosed, but it is expected to be equipped with sophisticated gadgets and comfortable seating arrangements, according to the sources.
The decision to get a new armoured car came after the Prime Minister’s security was reviewed by the elite Special Protection Group (SPG), which decided to add the highly regarded Mercedes-Maybach S650 Guard. Since taking office as Prime Minister, PM Modi has travelled in the Range Rover Vogue and Toyota Land Cruiser, and when he was Gujarat’s Chief Minister, he drove a modified Mahindra Bolero.
