Tata outsells Hyundai in car and SUV sales in December

Tata has set a decade-high yearly sales record, as well as quarterly and monthly sales records.

Tata Motors rounded out the year with the greatest performance in the passenger vehicle (PV) market in December, selling 35,300 wholesale units and 40,000 retail vehicles. Tata Motors has surpassed Hyundai in retail sales, advancing to second place.

Tata’s sales are increasing

The business is kicking off the new year on a strong note, with an aggressive SUV-led product onslaught. “Tata Motors set numerous new benchmarks throughout the quarter while suffering a shortage in production due to the ongoing semi-conductor crisis,” stated Shailesh Chandra, president, PVBU, Tata Motors. Quarterly and monthly sales reached decade highs, with 99,002 units sold in Q3 FY22 (up 44 percent from Q3 FY2021) and 35,299 units sold in December 2021 (up 50 percent from December 20). In addition, the company sold 3,31,178 automobiles in CY2021, the largest number ever since the PV business began.

“The enormous market response to Tata Punch’s October 2021 debut is further increasing demand for the company’s ‘New Forever’ range of cars and SUVs,” Chandra added.

Tata also reached some significant sales milestones in the electric vehicle market. According to Chandra, electric car sales reached a new high of 5,592 units in Q3 FY2022, a three-fold increase over Q3 FY2021. EVs accounted for 5.6 percent of monthly sales during the quarter, up from 1.8 percent in the same period of FY2020.

Tata Motors’ EV sales also surpassed 10,000 units in the first nine months of FY2022, and for the first time in December 2021, it surpassed the 2,000 monthly sales barrier (2,255 units).

However, Chandra stated that “semiconductor supplies will continue to be a major source of unpredictability in the future.” Furthermore, the impact of the new Covid strain must be continuously monitored. Figures for December 2021 sales from other Indian automakers

Maruti Suzuki, the country’s largest carmaker, saw its wholesale numbers drop by nearly 12% year on year to 1,13,851 vehicles.

Hyundai Motor India, the country’s second-largest automaker, saw its monthly and annual sales drop by about 13 percent and 32 percent, respectively. 32,312 units were sold wholesale by the Korean automaker.

Thanks to strong demand for its new introductions, such as the Thar and the XUV700, Mahindra further improved its performance with wholesale of 15,338 units. However, the carmaker is concerned about the prolonged chip shortage. “The difficulties around semi-conductor related products continue to be a challenge for the industry and is a major priority area for us,” said Veejay Nakra, CEO – Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra.

In December, Toyota Kirloskar Motor reported a 45 percent year-over-year growth in wholesale numbers of 10,382 units, but a 17 percent drop from the previous month’s sales.

The wholesale numbers for the younger Korean manufacturer Kia Motors India fell 34% year on year and 45 percent month on month to 7,797 units.
