The Taliban have captured Afghanistan’s Lashkar Gah, capital of the southern province of Helmand, after two weeks of heavy combating, a police official stated on Friday.
Government and senior armed forces officers flew by helicopter out of the federal government’s final stronghold within the city at about midnight on Thursday, stated the official, who declined to be recognized.
“About 200 ANDSF members, who were left in the governor’s compound, with the intervention of elders, surrendered to the Taliban,” stated the official, referring to members of the nationwide defence and safety forces and tribal elders.
