Ricky Ponting on Dinesh Karthik’s World T20 Chances

Karthik scored 330 runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2022.

Since the BCCI announced the lineup for the five-match T20I series against South Africa, Dinesh Karthik’s return has been a major discussion point. Karthik, 37, showed outstanding finishing skill in T20 cricket in the recently-concluded IPL 2022, leading to an India call-up. Will he play in 2022 T20 World Cup? Ricky Ponting weighs in.

Karthik scored 330 runs for Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2022. His spectacular batting helped RCB reach the playoffs for a second season, raising requests for him to be on the World Cup team.

Ponting endorsed the idea and said he would be shocked if India snubbed the experienced wicketkeeper-batsman for the October tournament.

“I’d give him a five or six,” he replied. “The manner he concluded games for RCB this year was outstanding.

“In the IPL, you want your best players to win two to four games. If you can get that, it’ll be a good return. Dinesh arguably impacted more games than other RCB players this year.

“Virat (Kohli) had a great year, Maxi (Glenn Maxwell) started nicely… DK won. And Faf, who kept RCB going. I’d be astonished if he wasn’t in India’s lineup.

India has two more T20I series to play, in Ireland and England, before the T20 World Cup.
