Rishabh Pant, the wicketkeeper-batsman, has come under fire for his shot selection in India’s second innings in the second Test match against South Africa in Johannesburg. South Africa levelled the three-match series by winning the Test match by seven wickets. During the second innings, Pant was removed for a three-ball duck while attempting to charge down the track and knock Kagiso Rabada over the infield. He only managed 17 runs off 43 balls in the first innings. Red-ball captain Virat Kohli backed the 24-year-old ahead of the last game of the three-match series, and disclosed some advice given by previous skipper MS Dhoni.

Kohli stated that he spoke with Pant during training and believes that the swashbuckling hitter will improve on his flaws

“During practise, we had a talk with Rishabh. A batter can tell if he hit the proper pitch in the right situation. As long as a person accepts responsibility for his or her actions (it should be fine). That, I believe, is how advancement is made, and everyone has made mistakes in their careers and gotten themselves out of difficult situations. Sometimes it’s our fault, and other times it’s because of the pressure. Sometimes it’s also attributable to the bowler’s ability “, he stated during a Monday virtual press conference.

“It’s crucial to understand your mental state at the time. What decision did you make, and what went wrong? I believe that only by admitting our error will we be able to improve and ensure that it does not happen again “, he went on to say.

Kohli shared a lesson he learned from former teammate Dhoni, saying that a player may progress in international cricket if there is a gap of “7-8 months” between two blunders.

“MS Dhoni instructed me at the start that there should be at least 7-8 months between two blunders. Only then does your international cricket career take off. So it’s always been in my head that I won’t make the same mistakes over and over. When you think about your mistakes, this happens “, he explained.

“That is something Rishabh does on his own, and I am aware of it. He will undoubtedly continue to improve in the future. He will ensure that he is there for the team in critical times, giving a good performance while also learning from his failures.
