Candy sticks and ice-cream sticks made from plastic could get phased out from January 1, 2022, the Centre knowledgeable Parliament on Friday.

Responding to a question on the phasing out schedule of single-use plastic, Minister of State for Environment Ashwini Choubey mentioned as per the draft notification issued earlier this 12 months, manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of among the recognized single-use plastic gadgets are proposed to be prohibited by January 1, 2022.

Earbuds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, sweet sticks, ice-cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol) for adornment are proposed to be phased out by January 1, whereas single-use plastic (together with polystyrene and expanded polystyrene) gadgets – plates, cups, glasses, forks, spoons, knives, straw, container and container lids, trays, plastic/PVC banners lower than 100 microns and stirrers are anticipated to be phased out by July subsequent 12 months.

Single-use plastic gadgets anticipated to be phased out by September 30 this 12 months embody carry baggage made from virgin or recycled plastic lower than 120 microns in thickness and non-woven plastic carry bag lower than 60 GSM (gram per sq. metre) or 240 microns in thickness, the minister knowledgeable Lok Sabha in a written response, including that the provisions shall not apply to commodities (together with carry baggage) made from compostable plastic materials.
