At least 12 people were killed and several others injured when a massive blast ripped through Karachi’s Shershah neighbourhood on Friday.
At least 12 people were killed and several others injured on Saturday when a massive blast ripped through the premises of a private bank located atop it, purportedly triggered by a gas explosion in a sewage system. According to reports, the majority of casualties are customers and staff inside the bank, which was constructed on top of a covered sewage channel in Karachi’s Shershah neighbourhood and collapsed following the explosion.
Officials stated that the cause of the explosion is being investigated because it is unknown whether the explosion was caused by a gas pipeline or a build-up of methane inside the sewage system.
“It is too early to determine whether the explosion was caused by a gas line or a sewer line. We are conducting an investigation “According to a senior police official.
‘Many were fearful of becoming trapped in the debris.’
Republic obtained video of the blast site, which shows damaged buildings surrounded by debris. Two excavators have been dispatched to the scene to clear the debris and rescue any trapped individuals.
Additionally, a bomb disposal unit (BDU) has arrived at the scene.
