Novak Djokovic defeated Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-3 to win his first match of the year at the Dubai Championships.
Novak Djokovic won his first match of the year on Monday, defeating Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-3 in the first round of the Dubai Championships.
Djokovic was unable to defend his Australian Open title last month after being deported due to a lack of vaccinations.
The United Arab Emirates allowed him to compete, and Djokovic won the tournament for the fifth time.
Musetti beat Djokovic in two sets at the French Open last year, but the Italian wild card couldn’t convert a slew of break chances while trailing 3-1 in the first set and 4-2 in the second on a breezy Dubai evening.
On the court, Djokovic said, “I have to be satisfied with my tennis, especially after not playing for two and a half, three months.” “Of course, there were times when I played well, and times when I made a couple of uncharacteristic unforced errors in a row.” But after a while, it’s normal to expect that (in my) first match.”
Karen Khachanov or Alex de Minaur are his next opponents.
Andy Murray won his first match in Dubai since defending his title last year. After nearly three hours, he defeated Australian qualifier Christopher O’Connell 6-7 (4), 6-3, 7-5.
