MUMBAI: Skipper Rohit Sharma ran out of excuses for the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) eight-game losing streak, admitting that shoddy batting has harmed the team and contributed to the disaster that has been the 2022 season for the five-time champions.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) defeated Mumbai Indians (MI) by 36 runs, with skipper KL Rahul scoring another century against his former club, while Rohit Sharma top scored for MI with 39.

“In this tournament, we haven’t batted well enough. Whoever fills the middle position must accept that responsibility and continue to play lengthy innings. Some opposition players have done so, and this is what is causing us problems. One individual must ensure that he bats as long as possible,” Rohit stated following the match.

Rohit admitted that some of his shots were reckless

“I thought we bowled reasonably well. It was not an easy task. It was an excellent pitch for batting. I believed that score should have been chased down, but our batting was insufficient. When you have such a goal, it is critical to form partnerships. However, there were some reckless shots in the middle, including mine,” he added.

Rohit believes that the way they are losing games puts everyone on the bench in contention.

“Everyone has weighed in on the outcome of our tournament. We need to establish a stable team and give players in the middle a fair chance,” he said when asked if Tim David’s inclusion is a possibility.

“Their roles are distinct when they represent their countries, and we expect something different from them here. We attempted to make few changes and to play the best combination possible.

“However, when you lose games, such discussions are inevitable. As far as I am concerned, I want to provide individuals with sufficient opportunities to demonstrate their worth. The season has not unfolded as planned, but such things happen,” he concluded.

The batting depth enables me to play freely, Rahul explains

KL Rahul, the skipper of Lucknow Super Giants, is pleased that his side’s depth as a result of multiple all-rounders allows him to play freely as he scored his second century of the season to completely demolish MI morale.

We were crystal clear going into the auctions – I’m a firm believer in having all-rounders on a team. Having them on the team simplifies my life in terms of options.

“This team does bat deep. Holder is batting eighth. With the depth, you have a little more freedom to play. That is almost certainly the only reason (for his higher strike rate),” Rahul said, referring to his strike rate of 147 plus.

“I’m attempting to play to the situation, to see what is expected of me. Batting is enjoyable, as is the responsibility. I’m crossing my fingers that I can continue to do the right things.”
