PUNJAB: Mayank Agarwal, an Indian batsman, is expected to lead Punjab Kings in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
Agarwal, a member of the Indian Test team, was one of two players retained by Punjab Kings ahead of the major auction earlier this month, alongside teenage pacer Arshdeep Singh.
Mayank will almost certainly lead the team. An IPL source told PTI that the announcement would come later this week.

Punjab, who had the most money going into the auction, made good use of it by signing Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Liam Livingstone, Kagiso Rabada, and repurchasing left-arm spinner Harpreet Brar and explosive Tamil Nadu batter Shahrukh Khan.
Although Dhawan’s name was floated as a captain candidate, the management was set on Agarwal being the team’s leader even before the auction.
“Dhawan is a wonderful addition to the lineup, and he was always on the auction block. Although he is a champion player, it appears that Punjab has been interested in Mayank as captain since KL Rahul’s departure,” the insider stated.
Over the last few years, Agarwal and Rahul have been one of the most productive opening pairs in the IPL. This season, Rahul will lead the Lucknow Super Giants.
When Rahul was sidelined last year, Agarwal captained the squad for a short time. In the last two seasons, Agarwal has amassed over 400 runs. He debuted in the IPL in 2011 and has since appeared in 100 games.
The 31-year-old has also represented India in 19 Tests and five One-Day Internationals.
Punjab Kings are seeking to end their IPL title drought with a good roster at their disposal. In 2014, they made their single and final appearance. In the previous three editions, they finished sixth out of eight teams.
