Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez have assured Charles Leclerc that they are confident in their Baku race pace.
Leclerc is looking to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after claiming his fourth pole position in a row. He hasn’t won a race since the Australian Grand Prix in April.
He was the class of the field after his pole-winning lap in Q3, with P2 starter Perez roughly three tenths of a second behind Leclerc’s monster lap. For Leclerc, it was back-to-back poles in Baku.
Though Red Bull team manager Christian Horner stated that their attention was on the race, Leclerc revealed that Perez and Verstappen, who starts third, had both expressed confidence in their race pace to him.
When asked by Sky Sports F1 if he believes he has the advantage over Red Bull on Sunday, Leclerc said, “I don’t know in the race.” When speaking with Max and Checo about the race, they appear to be very confident.
“I’m not sure whether they know something I don’t, but I was feeling very well after FP2 — the feeling was excellent on high fuel.” In qualy, today was a little less successful for me. So maybe everything will fall into place tomorrow and we will be able to achieve that win.”
At the previous round in Monaco, Leclerc’s strategy failed him miserably, with the 24-year-old going from leading his home race and in good position for victory to finishing P4.
Leclerc was comfortably leading the last race in Spain until he was forced to quit due to a power-unit problem.
So long as he avoids mistakes and bad luck on Sunday in Baku, Leclerc believes he can win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
“Good start,” Leclerc replied when asked how he expects to turn pole position into victory. There’s no doubt about it. Simply attempt to accomplish what we did in the previous races without making any mistakes.
“And the tempo is right.” In Barcelona, the pace was set, and in Monaco, it was followed. What occurred in Barcelona is what happened. And in Monaco, we made a mistake from which we will learn.
“However, if we execute everything perfectly tomorrow, I’m confident we’ll bring the win home.”
