MUMBAI: In a stunning development in the Sheena Bora murder case, her mother, Indrani Mukerjea, has claimed that her daughter is alive and well in Kashmir.
Indrani, who is being held in Mumbai’s Byculla jail for the murder of her daughter, has written to the CBI director, claiming that a female prison official told her he had seen Sheena in Srinagar while on vacation there.
Indrani has requested that the CBI search Kashmir for her daughter. Her attorney stated that she would file an application in this regard with the special CBI court on December 28, which is the next date of hearing in her case.
Officials from the CBI declined to comment on the claim. When the murder was discovered in 2015, the body was exhumed by police, and medical and forensic reports confirmed it was Sheena’s.
Sheena Khanna, 23, was murdered in 2012 by Indrani in collusion with her then-husband Peter and ex-husband Sanjeev Khanna over a financial dispute, according to the CBI.
Indrani, who has been imprisoned in Byculla Women’s Prison since 2015, claimed in the letter that she had seen Sheena Bora while on vacation in Srinagar.
A CBI official refused to comment when contacted.
According to her lawyer, Indrani will file an application in this regard before the special CBI court here on December 28, the next date of hearing in her case.
The high-profile murder case is being tried by a special court.
Indrani Mukerjea, her then-driver Shyamvar Rai, and her former husband Sanjeev Khanna allegedly strangled Sheena Bora (24) in a car in April 2012.
According to the CBI, Indrani disapproved of Sheena’s relationship with Rahul Mukerjea, the son of former media baron and Sheena’s first husband Peter Mukerjea.
According to the agency, she and Sheena also had a financial disagreement.
Sheena’s body was said to have been burned in a forest in the Raigad district.
When Shyamvar Rai was questioned by police in another case in 2015, he spilled the beans about the murder.
In this case, Peter Mukerjea is free on bail.
