In the first T20 International of the three-match series, which begins on Thursday in Dambulla, the Indian women’s cricket team will be hoping for a new beginning under new all-format skipper Harmanpreet Kaur.

India will want to start their campaign strong because the T20s will be played at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in eight months as well as the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

For the Indian women, this will be their first international assignment following their failure at the 2022 Women’s World Cup.

Notably, the legendary Mithali Raj, who hung up her boots earlier this month after an illustrious 23-year career, won’t be playing for the Indian team for the first time.

Harmanpreet, the captain, will be aiming for a milestone personally.

The 33-year-old batsman needs 46 more runs to surpass Mithali in the shortest format after accruing 2319 runs from 121 games.

The vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet, and coach Ramesh Powar will also be in the spotlight because they led India to a seven-match winning streak in the previous T20 World Cup before South Africa eliminated them in the semifinals.
While Pakistan recently humiliated Sri Lanka in a T20 series, winning 0-3, they will enter the series on the back foot.

The likes of Sri Lankan veterans Oshadi Ranasinghe and Chamari Athapaththu, however, will require the Indians to play with vigilance.

The Indians’ most recent shortest format match was a one-off against New Zealand in February of this year, which they lost by an 18-run margin.

Due to their current performance, players like Mandhana, Shefali Verma, Deepti Sharma, and pacer Pooja Vastrakar will bring enough confidence into the series.

India will undoubtedly start as the favourite against the Island nation based on their recent results and global rankings, and the hosts will need to significantly step up their game to overcome them.

Three ODIs, to be played at Pallekele on July 1, 4, and 7, will follow the three-game T20 series.
