The Indian women’s cricket team began its campaign by defeating Sri Lanka in a T20 series (Sri Lanka Women vs India Women, 1st T20I).
Team India dominated Sri Lanka by 34 runs in the opening T20 game played in Dambulla. When India batted first, they scored 138 runs in 20 overs, while Sri Lanka could only muster 104 runs in response.
For India, Radha Yadav claimed 2 wickets for 22 runs. Shefali Verma, Deepti Sharma, and Pooja Vastrakar each secured one wicket. Shefali Verma scored 31 runs while Jemimah Rodrigues scored an unbeaten 36 off 27 balls. Deepti Sharma scored 17 runs in 8 balls while batting in the final over.
Dismal Beginning for India
Harmanpreet Kaur, the new all-format captain of India, won the toss and elected to bat, but Sri Lanka got off to a great start. In the third over of the innings, Smriti Mandhana (01) of India lost her wicket.
In an effort to open her hand, the 25-year-old Indian player was hurt by the skilled Oshadi. Chamari Atapattu, who was positioned directly at mid-on, successfully intercepted the ball while attempting to play that shot. Sabhinene Meghna was dismissed to the dressing room by the knowledgeable Ranasinghe after she was unable to add a single run.
Rodrigues managed, and Harmanpreet-Shefali scored well
After losing two wickets early on in hot and humid circumstances, the pressure on the squad was evident. Shefali and Harmanpreet Verma managed this tricky circumstance together. The third player to be ejected was Shefali (31 runs), who was caught by Atapattu while attempting to play a huge shot.
The skipper Harmanpreet (22) was out LBW in the eleventh over by the spinner Inoka Ranaveera, demonstrating how expertly the Sri Lankan bowlers operated to ensure they secured a major wicket early. Richa Ghosh (11), a wicketkeeper-batsman, and Pooja Vastrakar (14), a visitor, fell to Ranaveera’s two additional wickets, bringing his total to six in the visitors’ 17 overs with a score of just 106 runs.
Rodrigues assumed responsibility for leading India to a satisfactory result after rejoining the team. Rodrigues, who batted fifth, did not feel pressured and contributed significant runs to the squad. At the other end, Deepti Sharma added 17 runs in eight balls after he struck three fours and a six.
