BERHAMPORE: On Wednesday, Border Security Force (BSF) personnel shot and killed an alleged Bangladeshi smuggler in Kaliachak, West Bengal’s Malda district, according to sources familiar with the situation.

When they were intercepted on their way to Bangladesh, the alleged smuggler and his 20-odd associates attacked BSF personnel with sharp weapons, according to an officer stationed in the area. The alleged smuggler, Ibrahim Sheikh, 24, of Dhulipara village in Shibganj, identified himself after being shot. Sheikh was rushed to a local hospital, where he was declared dead.

The gang was attempting to return to Bangladesh with bottles of cough syrup, according to the BSF officer. “Our troopers used stun grenades to try to stop them. However, the strategies were ineffective. Smugglers continued to flee towards Bangladesh’s border. Some of them turned around and charged at us. In self-defense, the troopers had to fire one round, and one man was hit. “The others were able to flee,” the officer, who did not want to be identified, said.

A mobile phone, two sickles, and 197 bottles of cough syrup were seized by the BSF on the spot. Sheikh lived about six kilometres from the international border and was found 1,200 metres inside Indian territory, according to a note sent to the Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB). The BGB was urged to be more vigilant in the letter.

Moajjem Hossain, the leader of the ruling Trinamool Congress, said they don’t know why the BSF opened fire. “If the smuggler had been apprehended alive, he could have provided valuable information.”
