In Delhi, all diesel vehicles older than ten years will be deregistered: Each and every detail

The Delhi government will issue a letter of authorization (NOC) to deregistered diesel vehicles, allowing them to be re-registered elsewhere.

The Delhi government has announced that on January 1, 2022, all diesel vehicles that have been registered for ten years will be deregistered. The decision was made in accordance with the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) guidelines. No objection certificates (NOC) will be issued to these deregistered diesel vehicles, allowing them to be re-registered in other states.

The Delhi Transport Department, on the other hand, has stated that no NOC will be issued to diesel vehicles that are 15 years old or older. The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had previously issued orders restricting the registration and use of diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years in the Delhi-NCR area. The directive was issued in July 2016 in order to reduce vehicular pollution in the nation’s capital.

According to a statement from the transport department, in order to comply with the NGT order, the department will first deregister all eligible diesel vehicles in Delhi on January 1st of the following year, which have completed or will complete 10 years on that date. It also stated that NOCs for diesel vehicles older than ten years and petrol vehicles older than fifteen years can be issued in any part of the country. This, however, comes with the caveat that NOCs will not be issued for areas designated by states as restricted areas for re-registration of such vehicles.

The order from the Delhi transport department also stated that owners of such diesel vehicles will have the option of converting their 10-year-old diesel or 15-year-old petrol vehicles to electric vehicles if they want to keep driving them. Only a few weeks ago, the Delhi government announced that old diesel and petrol vehicles will be able to be retrofitted with an electric vehicle kit.

Owners of affected vehicles can have their old petrol or diesel vehicles retrofitted with empanelled electric kits through agencies approved by the Delhi transport department. In other cases, vehicle owners will have no choice but to scrap their old vehicles. The Delhi transport department and traffic police teams have already seized such old vehicles and are sending them to authorised scrapyards for disposal.
