How Otmar Szafner Left Aston Martin

On Wednesday, Otmar Szafnauer, the Aston Martin Formula One team’s chief executive officer and team principal, announced his departure.

A leadership team would take over until a replacement was selected, according to the Silverstone-based team, which is owned by Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll.

“We would like to express our gratitude for his 12 years of service to the team and wish him well in the future as he will definitely take on new challenges.”

“Fortunately, we are led and managed by a capable group of people, and we feel confident in taking some time to consider our choices before announcing a new team structure.” The team’s present focus is on developing the most competitive car possible for the start of the 2022 season, according to the statement.

The Romanian-American engineer joined the team when it was still known as Force India in 2009, and when the Stroll consortium took over and relaunched the team to Racing Point in 2018, Szafnauer was promoted to team principal.

In 2021, the team changed its name to Aston Martin after Stroll purchased a 16.7% share in the British sports car manufacturer. Stroll has recently named Martin Whitmarsh, the former McLaren team manager, as CEO of Aston Martin Performance Technologies, a position that is senior to Szafnauer’s and handles the F1 team’s operations.

Szafnauer has been connected with a move to Alpine in late 2021, but when asked about it at the Brazilian Grand Prix in November, he dismissed the rumours as “just media conjecture.”
