Omicron has been discovered infected in an eight-year-old boy who arrived in Goa from the United Kingdom, marking the first case of the new coronavirus variant in the coastal state.

According to his test report from the National Institute of Virology in Pune, the boy, who travelled from the United Kingdom on December 17, 2021, was confirmed to be infected with Omicron, State Health Minister Vishwajit Rane told PTI on Monday.

According to Rane, the state government will follow the central government’s protocol and take stringent measures as needed.

In the wake of the upcoming New Year celebrations, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has already asked tourism stakeholders to remain vigilant and ensure that COVID-19 does not spread during the festivities.

According to official data, Goa reported 25 new cases of coronavirus on Sunday, bringing the state’s total infection count to 1,80,050, while the death toll remained constant at 3,519.
