During annual drills, Iran fires over a dozen ballistic missiles as a warning to Israel

Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard fired more than a dozen surface-to-surface ballistic missiles aimed at Israel as part of an annual drill on Friday.

Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard fired more than a dozen surface-to-surface ballistic missiles aimed at Israel as part of an annual drill on Friday. During the ongoing major military exercise across the southern part of the country, at least 16 missiles were fired, with one “successfully” hitting a “target,” according to Iran’s state media IRNA news agency, citing the Guard. Iran also launched cruise missiles on the second day of its drill, demonstrating “readiness of its forces.”

The missiles named Emad, Ghadr, Sejjil, Zalzal, Dezful, and Zolfaghar were part of the five-day annual exercise ‘Payambar-e-Azam,’ which began on Monday, according to the Guard. This came just days after talks in Vienna to resurrect the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with Iran broke down. The Associated Press reported that while talks to resolve Iran’s compliance with the nuclear deal are still ongoing, the nuclear-weapons-wielding country has continued to hold military exercises aimed at demonstrating the strength of its forces and testing new weapons.

Iran’s Chief of Armed Forces says the missiles are a response to Israel’s “massive but pointless threats.”

The launch of the modified warfare weaponry was shown on Iranian state media, according to the Associated Press. Iran claims that its short- and medium-range missiles can reach US bases in the region as well as its arch-enemy Israel. The missiles in question have a range of 350 to 2000 kilometres.

“Sixteen missiles were fired at the chosen target, destroying it. Part of the hundreds of Iranian missiles capable of destroying a country that dared to attack Iran were used in this exercise. These drills were designed in response to the Zionist regime’s massive but pointless threats made in recent days…make the slightest mistake, and we’ll cut off their hand, “Major General Mohammad Hossein Bagheri, Iran’s Chief of Armed Forces, told state media, according to The Times of Israel.

It’s worth noting that US national security adviser Jake Sullivan met with Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett on Wednesday, as the JCPOA continues to stall. In the meantime, Israel’s leaders have hinted at retaliating against Iran’s aggression, with Bennett accusing Tehran of “nuclear blackmail.” Iran’s use of ballistic missiles was also condemned by the British Foreign Office, which called it a “threat to regional and international security.”
