‘Djokovic, Novax?’ Netizens are divided over an Amul cartoon urging World No. 1 to vaccinate

Novak Djokovic’s visa was cancelled upon his arrival in Melbourne after Amul uploaded a cartoon illustration of his current COVID-19 vaccination.

Amul, an Indian dairy cooperative society, is known for using cartoon illustrations to illustrate interesting and trending topics. On January 6, Amul posted a cartoon illustration to their official Twitter account, referring to Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic’s current situation in Australia. Djokovic arrived in Australia on January 5th in preparation for the 2022 Australian Open. However, when he arrived in Melbourne, the Australian Border Force cancelled his visa because he had not yet been vaccinated against the Covid-19 virus.

Amul appears to have poked fun at the World No. 1 tennis player in their cartoon illustration.

“Novax, Djokovic?” said Amul, appearing to be a jab at the World No. 1 tennis player. The Australian Open organisers had previously stated in November 2021 that all players competing in the Australian Open 2022 must be fully vaccinated against the virus. Djokovic’s participation was questioned, with many speculating on whether he would be permitted to travel to Australia. On January 3, Tennis Australia chief Craig Tiley confirmed that unvaccinated players would be allowed to compete in the tournament if they had first completed a rigorous medical exemption application process.

After arriving in Melbourne, what happened to Novak Djokovic?
Novak departed for Australia on Wednesday, believing he had all of the necessary documents to compete in the coveted first major tournament of the year, including the Covid-19 vaccine exemption permission. Djokovic announced his departure for the tournament by posting a photo of himself on social media, which sparked outrage from the Australian public and media. Djokovic’s visa was revoked and he was ordered to leave the country after the situation quickly devolved into a political drama. He has, however, filed an appeal against the deportation order and is currently being held in an immigration detention hotel in Melbourne.
