To avoid the fury of western countries that have come together in a rare show of unity, China maintained a neutral stance on Ukraine rather than supporting its close ally Russia. In the face of such unanimity, the world’s second largest economy’s immense strength appears to be waning.
During the United Nations Security Council meeting, there was an amusing side show involving a US-backed motion condemning Russia’s invasion on Ukraine. Because Russia had the veto, the motion was bound to lose, but the surprise came from countries that did not vote. In the face of enormous pressure and possibly veiled threats from the US and Russia, India shown grit by remaining firm and neutral. China also didn’t vote, but it wasn’t for show.
