Chidambaram Says Congress Is Ready To Work With Any Party

His comments come after TMC leader Mahua Moitra said the Mamata Banerjee-led party was open to forming a pre-election coalition with the GFP and Congress.
P Chidambaram, a senior Congress leader, stated on Saturday that the party is willing to take help from any party that wants to defeat the BJP in the upcoming Goa Assembly elections.

His remarks come after Mahua Moitra, the Trinamool Congress Party’s Goa desk in-charge, said that Mamata Banerjee’s party was open to forming a pre-election coalition with the Goa Forward Party (GFP) and Congress.

“I saw the TMC’s remark on the alliance in the press today,” the former Union minister told reporters here. “Let’s wait for the formal pronouncement.” The Congress is capable of defeating the BJP on its own, but “why should I say no if any party wants to help the Congress fight the BJP?” Chidambaram was perplexed.

The Congress’ strength has fallen in the last five years after obtaining the maximum 17 seats in the 40-member Goa Assembly in 2017. The Congress has only two MLAs in the House after losing a majority of its MLAs to the BJP and at least two to the TMC, a newcomer to Goa politics.

For the state elections scheduled for next month, the Congress has already formed a pre-poll alliance with the GFP, while the TMC has a deal with the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). Moitra had tweeted, tagging GFP and Congress, saying the TMC would do “everything possible” to defeat the BJP.

The Congress won 17 seats in the 40-member House of Goa in the 2017 elections, but it was unable to gain power because the BJP, which won 13, combined with various independents and regional parties to create the government under Manohar Parrikar.
