BMW Motorcycles May Soon Feature Adjustable Seat Widths

BMW Motorrad’s new seat design demonstrates an incredibly simple method of increasing the width of motorcycle seats.

While many regular motorcycles already have height-adjustable seats, BMW Motorrad is currently developing new seats that can also be adjusted for width. With the upcoming saddle design, BMW intends to raise the bar even higher for its upcoming R 1250 GS adventure bike.

BMW’s new seat design demonstrates how easy it is to increase the width of motorcycle seats. A similar design is also present for bicycles, which makes one wonder why it isn’t already in use for motorcycles.

The seat is divided three ways, with the rear two pieces adjustable for increased width and the front element fixed as usual. Each section appears to have its own set of seat covers as well.

The seat appears to be normal in normal settings, but when the cover is removed, the design reveals that the two back sections pivot from their outer front corners and are supported on curved runners beneath. It should be noted, however, that while the rear halves sections can be swung outward to increase the overall width, the process does create a central gap.

The patent reveals that threaded fasteners are used to secure the seat in place.

This suggests that the seat adjustment might not be as quick as desired. To put it another way, the rider must first loosen the fasteners beneath the seat, then shift the sides to the desired position before retightening the fasteners to secure the seat sides.

It’s also possible that it’ll be tedious.

The patent also mentions other possibilities: “a further aspect of the invention provides that the adjusting device can be actuated electrically and/or manually.” As a result, the adjusting device includes an electric motor and/or a mechanical mechanism for pivoting the two pivoting sections.

Whatever the case may be, the new seat isn’t expected to appear in BMW models until 2023 or 2024.
