Bhutan is the latest country to bestow the highest civilian honour on Prime Minister Modi.

Bhutan is the most recent and closest of India’s near neighbours to honour Prime Minister Modi with its highest civilian honour. Previously, the current Prime Minister of India had received the highest honours from Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, the Maldives, Palestine, and Bahrain.

The award is in recognition of India’s friendly approach to Bhutan under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership. During the pandemic, India provided vaccines, medicines, and other emergency services to the neighbouring country. The honour reaffirms the two countries’ friendship. The awarding of the country’s highest honour to Prime Minister Modi comes amid rising border tensions between China and Bhutan. The highest decoration, Ngadag Pel gi Khorlo, is given in recognition of a lifetime of service to the people and Kingdom of Bhutan.
