TVs have become smarter, but they are also getting bigger in dimensions at the same time. In the old days, TVs were made up of CRTs responsible for putting a lot of stress on your eyes. Modern smart TVs don’t have those old tubes anymore; however, the increasing size of the screen is still in question for impacting your eyes.

Large screen televisions have become common these days. Most brands offer TVs with built-in features like YouTube, Netflix, browsing, etc, all in one spot. This has made life much easier for people who want to enjoy content on a bigger TV screen.

So, how do you know whether a wide or large TV screen is affecting your vision or not? Well, to find this out, you have to spend an hour or two in front of the TV watching any movie or your favorite program.

After some time, you’ll feel your eyes start watering. This will happen more often if you are sitting closer to the television. Keep in mind that there’s a recommended distance at which you should sit in front of the TV depending upon its size.

Research shows a specific area of vision that your eyes can easily handle at a given time. And if you increase that area, it will be harder for your eyes to take that visual information.

There are peripheral visual cells in your eyes that respond to the simultaneous motion occurring on a TV screen.

Take an example of watching movies with your kids in a cinema. We all know that cinema screens are more significant than our regular TV screens. Yet, if you have even been with your kids to the cinema, you have found them sleepy before the movie ends.

It’s not because the movie was boring or not full of action; it is because the visual stimulation is overwhelming on a cinema screen.

When you are watching content on a bigger screen, then too many stimuli trigger your eyes from large viewing angles.

But do you know that the same features that overwhelm your eyes are praised by most people in a smart TV? Everyone needs a TV with excellent viewing angles, higher nits, and a brightness/contrast ratio.

No doubt, modern smart TVs are jam-packed with features that we once wished for. However, we cannot rule out the cons that are linked to it. Innovative screen technologies are impacting our vision that, in a way, we hardly notice at all.

How to Prevent Eye Strain While Watching TV?

If you expose your eyes to a TV screen for long hours, you’ll come up with the adverse effects of it. On top of that, if you are watching movies or programs on TV in a dark room, then you are more likely to put a strain on your vision.

The dark environment around you puts more pressure on your iris and makes it more comprehensive than usual to attract more light. This may result in eye strain, headache, fatigue, and tiredness over time.

Before you decide to spend a lot of time in front of a TV screen, keep these essential points in mind:

·       Sit at least 5 to 10 meters away from the TV screen. You can also measure the width of your TV and then multiply it by 5 to get the ideal sitting distance.

·       Place the TV at your eye level to put less stress on your eye and head muscles.

·       We always stress watching TV in favorable lighting conditions. Make sure there is at least some amount of light in your TV room. Turning off the lights and watching TV for long hours will cause harm to your vision no matter how much-advanced TV technology you have.

·       Take some break after two or three hours to relax your eyes and other body muscles. It’s better to go outside and to refresh your eyes with colors spread by nature.

What Else Could You Do?

·       If you feel a strain on your eyes after watching TV, it’s better to put a warm cloth on them to give some relief to them.

·       It’s better to sleep at least 7 to 8 hours after you’ve watched TV for a long time. Not only will this give relief to your eyes but it will also help to restore the energy in your body.

·       Don’t forget to blink your eyes in front of a TV screen. An average human blinks every 5 seconds. Blinking is something gifted by nature to keep our eyes fresh most of the time.

·       It’s better to visit your doctor and ask for some special eye exercises. Then, try doing those exercises to strengthen your eye muscles. If you excessively watch TV, then it’s better to go for an eye test to know about the health of your eyes.
